The article deals with the practice of the financing of public education in the Vologda province in the second half of the XIX century - the beginning of the XX century. The article, basing on the historicalcomparative approach compares the objects, forms, types and sources of the financing of primary education. The study of the problem is based on the analysis of the archival materials and published record management and statistical documents
